On September 16th, Kim Jho Kwang Soo tweeted his feelings about the backlash he and his “husband” Rainbow Factory CEO’s Kim Seung Hwan are receiving for trying to get their marriage legally recognized. So far, the district office of Seodaemun accepted to receive their documents because they found no rules saying specifically that a same-sexy couple couldn’t submit a request to register. However, the final decision to legalize their marriage will be taken by a Court. It is a first in Korea. While Kim Jho Kwang Soo and Kim Seung Hwan receive some support, they are also the target of many homophobic protests. Here’s what Kim Jho Kwang Soo has to say :
저희 혼인신고를 접수하겠다고 한 서대문구청에 호모포비아단체, 개인들이 혼인신고 반대 민원을 많이 제기하고 있다고 하네요. 원칙대로 하겠다는데, 왜들 극성들일까요? 두려움이겠죠?

Heard that homophobic groups and such are filing a civil complaint against our marriage registration that the Seodaemun district office accepted to receive. They [t/n: the district office] said they’re going by the book, so why so much negativity/why being so extreme? Feeling scared? *
Later, Kim Seung Hwan explained during a phone interview with Starnews : “Having people speaking up against our marriage registration was something we had expected. The critics have always come from Christian lobbyists showing their disapproval through extremist ways. The Seodaemun district office said they would receive it based on the right procedure. I feel sorry for the Seodaemun district office staff who have to deal with the calls of complaints.”
Kim Jho Kwang Soo and Kim Seung Hwan have discussed with their lawyers and have decided to go submit their marriage registration some time after Chuseok. Will they be the first gay couple to get married in Korea ? Time will tell.
* t/n : this is a rough translation. with no pronouns, i’m not too sure of who says what, but I’m sure about the fact that a civil complaint is being filed.
